Whether you call it a quote, a Request for Quote (RFQ), an estimate or a price check, a good quote starts with a complete request. You don’t need a drawing or a long list of requirements to get started — just five pieces of information.
The five essentials
- AlloyThe grade of material — for example 301, 304, 316 / 316L, 17-7PH® or 1008 / 1010.
- TemperThe condition or hardness — for example Annealed, Quarter Hard, Half Hard or Full Hard.
- ThicknessDecimal thickness in inches or millimeters — for example .005″ or 0.127 mm.
- Width (+ Length for sheets)Coil: width is all we need. Cut sheets: width and length. In inches or millimeters.
- QuantityHow much material you need — for example in pounds or kilograms, feet or meters, or number of pieces.
Dimensions and quantities can be given in either imperial or metric units.
Shortcut: give us the AMS specification
If you know the AMS specification, it answers #1 and #2 at once, because each AMS spec covers a specific alloy/temper combination. For example:
- AMS 5513 is 304 Annealed
- AMS 5519 is 301 Full Hard
- AMS 5529 is 17-7PH® Condition C
So a complete request can be as short as one line:
CoilAMS 5513 · .005″ thick · 1.000″ wide · 500 lbs
SheetsAMS 5519 · .010″ thick · 24.000″ wide × 120.000″ long · 50 sheets
Or in metricAMS 5513 · 0.127 mm thick · 25.4 mm wide · 225 kg
Not sure which spec matches your alloy and temper? Look it up in the Specification Cross Reference, or search the Stock List by spec number.
Helpful, but not required
If your order has other requirements, including them up front saves a round of questions:
- Coil I.D. / O.D. or packaging requirements
- Edge condition — slit, round or deburred
- Tolerances tighter than standard
- Specifications or certifications your drawing or purchase order calls for
