What is 321 stainless tool wrap used for?

Thin 321 stainless foil wrapped around tool steel parts to protect their surfaces during heat treating and brazing.

Tool steel parts wrapped in stainless steel tool wrap beside a roll of foil, with wrapped parts inside a heat-treating furnace.

Tool wrap is thin stainless steel foil used to wrap tool steel parts, such as dies, punches, cutters and knives, before they go into a heat-treating furnace.

What it does

The foil envelope shields the part’s surface from the furnace atmosphere, helping prevent scale (oxidation) and decarburization. Parts come out cleaner and need less grinding or finishing.

Tool wrap is also used to protect parts during brazing and other high-temperature work.

Why 321 stainless

Our tool wrap is Type 321 stainless, a titanium-stabilized grade suited to high temperatures. It’s supplied annealed, so it’s soft and easy to fold and crimp into a tight wrap around the part.
